Alvaro Bautista secured a second row start for his home Grand Prix after an intense qualifying session this afternoon at Jerez del la Frontera. The Spaniard managed to improve his feeling with his rear tyre before pushing hard in the grid shootout, sealing sixth place in hot and slippery conditions. His Team GO&FUN Honda Gresini team-mate Bryan Staring also enjoyed a positive afternoon, the Australian qualifying in a season-best 18th on the team's CRT bike.

Niccolò Antonelli showed his potential in the Spanish Grand Prix, qualifying on the second row of the grid here at Jerez this afternoon. It could have been even better for the Italian youngster if it wasn't for a mistake on his final lap but sixth place is a good position to start from in tomorrow's race. His team-mate Lorenzo Baldassarri's participation is in doubt after the rookie suffered a left shoulder injury in a crash today
