Aboard the Junior Team GO&FUN Moto3 KTM, Niccolò Antonelli clinched today the fifth position during the qualifying session for the Grand Prix of the Americas and therefore he will start tomorrow’s race from the second row of the grid. The 18-year-old Italian maintained the third position for a long time, eventually closing the session two places behind, also because of a slight crash during his last time attack with new tyres. Following the fall in the third and final free practice session earlier this morning, Enea Bastianini instead struggled to find the good rhythm he was able to put on display yesterday, closing the qualifying in 21st place with a best lap time of 2’18”615, the same result he had obtained during the qualifying of his Grand Prix debut in Qatar.
NICCOLO' ANTONELLI (5th - 2'17"380) “The first half of our qualifications has been perfect: we were able to keep a good pace, staying in the top three for a long time. In the end I went out for the last attempt with new tyres and I fell right out of the pits, but I don’t know if it was my mistake or if there was something strange with the tyres. In any case, I managed to come back to the saddle and to slightly improve my time, though obviously without the fall I could get something more. Tomorrow it would be nice to be able to stay with the leading group, because they are not far away and we are consistent. Unfortunately the weather forecast says it will rain tomorrow, so if the race will be wet, we don’t know what to expect”.
ENEA BASTIANINI (21st - 2'18"615) “Unfortunately qualifying didn’t go as hoped: we paid the crash of this morning, which made us lose time and didn’t allow us to adapt the bike to the track conditions, which in the meantime have changed. I didn’t feel comfortable with the bike and the wind didn’t help us. Tomorrow we will try to make the most of the warm-up to try to get back to yesterday’s level; anyway, tomorrow it won’t be easy to make a comeback in the race”.
FAUSTO GRESINI “Right from the beginning Niccolò has always kept a good pace, and without the small crash in the latter part of the session, he could have improved even more. We will check if there has been a problem with the tyres, but all in all we are happy with the second row: apart from Miller, who has gone really fast, we are close to the other riders, so tomorrow it will be crucial to make a good start in order to try to stay with them. Today Bastianini struggled a lot finding the right way; it’s a pity, because he went very fast during the first day of practice. Enea still pays a little inexperience, but it’s normal because he’s still very young”.Published on : Apr 11 2014
