Enea Bastianini claimed today in Jerez his best result of the season closing the Spanish Grand Prix in ninth place after an enthralling battle to the last lap, which saw him protagonist of several overtakes. Started from the fifteenth position on the grid, halfway through the race the Junior Team GO&FUN Moto3 rookie settled himself in 12th place, keeping the lead of the large group of pursuers, then thanks to a late charge he was able to catch and overtake also the three riders in front of him - Kent , Ajo and Oliveira. The 16-year-old from Rimini has therefore collected points for the third consecutive race, reaching 16 point and consolidating his leadership in the “rookie of the year” classification, ahead of Czech Karel Hanika. After a good start from the front row, his team-mate Niccolò Antonelli was battling in the leading group when, during the third lap, a contact with Francesco Bagnaia’s KTM at turn 6 forced him to fall. He then re-joined the race, before being forced to retire due to a damaged front brake lever.
NICCOLO' ANTONELLI (DNF) “There's not much to say, unfortunately: I made a good start and everything was going perfectly, when at one point Bagnaia had the bright idea to hit me, throwing me down. Let's hope it doesn’t happen anymore. Due to the fall, the front brake lever was broken, so I was forced to retire even if I was able to re-join the race. I could have battled for a good position in the leading group, because the bike was fast and we worked well throughout the entire weekend. Now we hope that the next Grand Prix will be positive to the end”.
ENEA BASTIANINI (9th) “It’s been a fantastic race! My start was good and I also tried to stay close to the front group, but I didn't succeed because the battle with the other riders slowed me down; however, later I was able to take the lead of my group and therefore I started to make my rhythm. When I saw the three riders in front of me, I gave my best to reach them and when I did it was very nice, because I've also beaten them to the finish line with some good overtaking maneuvers. I'm really happy with this result! I’m only a bit disappointed because today the bike was not working perfectly, but that’s okay: we will solve these small problems in time for the next race”.
FAUSTO GRESINI “Unfortunately Bagnaia hit Antonelli, throwing him down: that’s racing, obviously, but this episode is really a pity because Niccolò is certainly not through a fortunate period. I understand that for a young rider like him is definitely not easy to react after three zeros, but now Nicco must hold on. Today he proved to be competitive, so he must remain clear if he wants to succeed. Bastianini made a superb race: we have already become accustomed to these performances, and it seems that the only thing that's missing now is the experience, although today he raced like a well experienced rider”.Published on : May 3 2014
