Alvaro Bautista leaves Catalunya empty handed: the Team GO&FUN Honda Gresini rider has in fact been forced to retire in his home Grand Prix when the engine of his Honda RC213V machine turned off after just three laps. A first analysis highlighted an electrical problem, although now the team will investigate more deeply the reasons of the problem together with HRC.
His team-mate Scott Redding crossed the finish line in 12th position, first among the riders aboard the Open Class Honda RCV1000R. After the race, the British rookie was penalized by half a second due to an off-track excursion at Turn 1: therefore, the final classification Redding is in 13th position, behind Nicky Hayden. However, after the excursion Scott slowed down on Sector 2, allowing Hayden, who was behind him, to regain time.

ALVARO BAUTISTA (DNF) “After only 3 laps, the bike stopped when I was on the straight and I couldn’t continue the race. We analyzed the data and looks like an electric problem, but we will investigate it in order to understand better what happened. It’s disappointing because after yesterday’s crash I tried my maximum to take part to the race and in the beginning I had a good feeling; it would be possible to fight for a good results, but this kind of things can happen, so now we have to look forward to tomorrow’s test and the next race”.

SCOTT REDDING (13th) “I’m happy with the race, although in the early stages I came together with Crutchlow, losing one second and this allowed Hayden to come closer to me. Anyway, apart from the time penalty, in the end we managed to be again on top as Open Class Honda, that was our target for this weekend. I’m happy also because this is not one of my favourite circuits. Using the softer tyre was a big gamble, but in the end it was not a bad idea. About the penalization, I had a little problem backshifting into turn 1, and instead taking the risk to crash, I went straight, gaining a little bit of time, but then in Sector 2 I gave back some of this time. But I got penalized by the time I gained and it’s difficult to accept it because I slowed down in Sector 2 to make the race fair: without slowing down, even with the penalization I would have been in the same position. I’m a little bit disappointed but there’s nothing I can do”.

FAUSTO GRESINI “I’m sorry for the problem occurred to Bautista: after just three laps, is bike turned off and he couldn’t continue. However, it was a difficult weekend in general, with Alvaro that took part to the race feeling sore following yesterday’s crash. We could try to collect important points, but unfortunately his Grand Prix finished very early. Now together with HRC we will check what was the problem. Scott got the maximum from his package: apart from the penalty, that we believe too severe since Scott slowed down after he went wide, confirmed himself as the fastest rider aboard the 'Production Racer' Honda, so I'm satisfied with his performance and also confident ahead of the upcoming events”.
